Puerto de Mogán, often called the “Little Venice of Gran Canaria,” has its own rhythm that seems to flow slower than the rest of the island. For Auke and Miranda, this small fishing village blended with a marina and sandy beach is not just a postcard scene – it’s a place to walk, explore, and breathe in the essence of Gran Canaria.
The evening began with a gentle stroll along the beach promenade. The sound of waves brushing against the golden sand gave a calm background melody as. Auke pointed out how the promenade itself seemed alive – lined with small cafés, ice cream shops, and boutiques selling summer dresses, handmade jewelry, and souvenirs that spark the memory of a holiday well spent. Miranda enjoyed stopping here and there to peek into little shops, while Auke preferred to watch the horizon.
From the promenade, they naturally drifted into the harbour of Puerto de Mogán. Here, the atmosphere shifted. The fishing village charm met the luxury of sailing yachts, with their masts gently swaying in the breeze. Narrow whitewashed alleys with bougainvillea climbing over balconies framed the walk, turning each corner into a photograph waiting to be captured. Small restaurants offered fresh seafood, and the scent of grilled fish mixed with garlic and olive oil filled the air. Auke and Miranda stopped for a moment near the water. They could almost imagine the stories of sailors and locals who had seen this harbour transform from a modest fishing port to one of the island’s most picturesque marinas.
But the highlight of the evening was yet to come. They decided to climb the 257 steps leading through the small alleys up the hill to the viewpoint. It was not an easy climb – the alleys were narrow, sometimes steep, and each turn revealed another set of stairs. Yet, it was also part of the magic: colorful houses decorated with flowers, hidden corners where cats stretched in the nightlight, and the gentle murmur of evening life from the homes they passed.
Step by step, they climbed higher, their anticipation building. When they finally reached the viewpoint, the reward was breathtaking. Puerto de Mogán lay before them, glowing with hundreds of tiny lights. The marina sparkled like a constellation reflected in water, the promenade buzzed softly with life below, and the dark silhouettes of the mountains framed the scene. Auke and Miranda stood silently for a while, simply taking it all in. The town looked like a treasure chest glowing in the night – intimate, warm, and alive.
For a moment, they felt as though they were standing both inside and outside of time. The steps, the alleys, the harbour, and the beach promenade had all been part of their evening journey, and now everything came together in one panoramic view. Puerto de Mogán was not just a destination – it was an experience, one that left them with the sense of having touched something timeless.
Walking back down under the soft light of street lamps, Auke and Miranda promised themselves that this would not be their last evening in Puerto de Mogán. For in its lights, its alleys, and its sea, they found not only beauty but also a reminder of why they explore Gran Canaria together: to collect moments that glow like the harbour lights in the night.
