A Day in the Mountains: Exploring the Almond Blossoms of Gran Canaria
Today was one of those days that felt like an adventure right from the start. The sun was shining brightly, and the skies were an endless blue, promising a perfect day for a little exploration. We, Auke, Miranda, Ralf, Susanne set off at 10 AM, eager to embark on our mountain excursion in search of the much-anticipated almond blossoms. The journey ahead would take us deep into the heart of Gran Canaria’s stunning natural landscape.
Our route took us up the winding roads toward San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where we were greeted by a surprising number of cyclists. The trail seemed to be a popular choice for bike enthusiasts, their wheels spinning tirelessly as they made their way uphill, each person determined to conquer the mountainous terrain. It was a lovely sight, adding a little touch of life and activity to the already picturesque landscape.
As we drove past San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the scenery started to transform. And there they were—the almond blossoms. We had finally arrived at the first signs of the season. The trees were dotted with delicate flowers in hues of white and soft pink, their blossoms contrasting beautifully with the backdrop of rugged mountains. The flowers looked like soft, fragile confetti thrown into the air, gently fluttering against the bright blue sky. It was a sight to behold.
We stopped for a moment to take it all in, admiring the simple beauty of the blossoms. Nature’s artwork, as if painted by hand, reminding us of the delicate balance of life in these mountains. The scent of the flowers mingled with the crisp air, a refreshing reminder of the world beyond the city.
Our next stop was Tejeda, but, to our surprise, the almond blossoms there were a bit sparse. We had hoped for a magnificent sea of white and pink, but the blooms just weren’t as plentiful. Despite that, the mountain views remained as breathtaking as ever, with jagged peaks and valleys stretching out in every direction.
Undeterred, we continued on our journey, driving toward Cruz de Tejeda. As we made our way up the winding roads, the temperature dropped, and a cloud cover began to settle over the landscape. It felt as if we had entered a mystical fairy tale. The clouds surrounded us, soft and thick, transforming the world into something out of a dream. We drove through the mist, the world shrouded in white, and suddenly, there it was—the Roque Nublo, the iconic rock formation of Gran Canaria, was cloaked in this mysterious blanket of clouds. It was a moment of pure magic, as though we had stumbled upon a secret world hidden from the rest of the island.
After our detour through the clouds, we continued our drive down the mountain, making our way through the charming villages of San Mateo and Santa Brigida. The picturesque towns offered glimpses of traditional Canarian life, with stone houses dotting the hillsides and narrow streets winding through the mountains.
Our hunger began to grow, so we decided to head toward Las Palmas to grab a bite. We ended up stopping at Las Arenas shopping center, where we enjoyed a delicious break. It was just what we needed after a long, adventurous drive through the mountains.
As we made our way back home, the day felt like a perfect balance of nature, serenity, and good company. We had set out looking for almond blossoms, but we had found so much more. The mountain air, the unexpected clouds, and the beauty of the landscape all contributed to an experience that will stay with us for a long time.
It truly was a beautiful day, one filled with nature’s wonders, good food, and wonderful companions. We may not have found an abundance of almond blossoms, but we found something even more precious—a memory of a day spent together, exploring the stunning mountains of Gran Canaria.
